The Moeraki Boulders lie along Koekohe Beach like a dropped necklace — septarian concretions sixty million years in the making, exhumed one by one as the mudstone cliffs give them up. In Māori tradition they are the eel baskets of the wrecked Āraiteuru waka, washed ashore and turned to stone.
