The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests rises above the crimson precinct wall at the Temple of Heaven, its three blue-tiled roofs stacked against a Beijing sky. The great round hall — where emperors prayed each spring for a good harvest — was raised in timber without a single structural nail; burned after a lightning strike in 1889, it was faithfully rebuilt.
