The Great Wall

The Wall runs the ridgelines at Jinshanling, watchtower after watchtower fading into the haze — the celebrated ten-kilometre stretch towards Simatai, where restored parapet gives way to wild, broken brick. Photographed in spring 2006 with the first blossom out on the hillside. The walk ends above Mandarin Duck Lake, and the way down is a zip wire strung across the water.
