Winter Butterfly

A lone swimmer flies the butterfly through a channel cut in the ice at Labour Park, watched from the snow-covered bank. Winter swimming — 冬泳 — is a point of pride across China’s north-east, where clubs keep a lane open all season and break the new ice each morning. Photographed on the day of the first heavy snowfall of the winter of 2005–06, on the same lake as CHI 1002.
